Heart Murmurs Giving Your Heart a Scare?

These two words, heart, and murmur, are likely to strike fear in the hearts of many parents. What parents do not realize is that a heart murmur is not always a sign of a serious problem. A heart murmur is simply the sound given to the flow of blood through the heart. Of course there are some murmurs caused by serious cardiac conditions. It is always important to listen closely to your child's pediatrician when a murmur is involved. Here are a couple of common facts about heart murmurs that may help to set your soul at ease.

Healthy children get heart murmurs too. Some murmurs are caused by abnormal causes but the opposite is just as true. Anxiety is one normal cause and fever is another. These two things speed up the flow of blood through the heart and often cause murmurs. If your child is diagnosed with a heart murmur try not worrying too much initially. Wait until all factors are made clear. Most likely the murmur will be less serious than you think. Many heart murmurs are innocent and your child will still be able to play sports and live a normal life!
