Parents and Discipline

Discipline is a word parents deal with almost everyday. It is important in raising respectful children. The basis of discipline is teaching your children the difference between right and wrong. The best way for you to do this is to set limits, make them clear to your children and stand by them. At times your kids are going to test these limits. This is their way of learning about you and them. When this happens and they step over the boundaries you have set for them you must remember to remain calm first and foremost. Use a timeout when this happens. It will end up being a timeout for both of you. Your kids will know that what they did was wrong and mommy and daddy mean business. You can use the time to cool down and decide on a punishment.

Remember that discipline also involves manners. Teaching your children personal discipline is very important. Reminding them to say "please" and "thank you" is an example of personal discipline. Praise your children for good behavior; don't just scold them when they misbehave. Teaching your children good manners will benefit them in the long run. This may be difficult to do at first but discipline is the most natural form of parenting. Its outcome is a more pleasant child and if done in a loving way discipline is not too difficult.
