When Should My Child Brush His Own Teeth?
There is no certain age at which children should brush their own teeth. This really depends on how well your child can handle their toothbrush. To begin with, watch your child as they brush. Make sure they know the correct motions to use. Watching them brush and making suggestions will teach them the correct way to brush their teeth. Watching them will also make brushing correctly a habit for them. If you don't watch them brush make sure to check their mouth and teeth when they finish. Your ultimate goal is to show them how to keep their teeth clean so be sure to help them with the basics.
Don't forget that their teeth need flossing as well. This may be more difficult for children to remember. If your child does not want to floss have your family dentist talk to them about the importance of flossing. As always set an example for your children. Share brushing and flossing time with them every night. This will show them the importance of good dental hygiene and your whole family will end up with healthier teeth and gums!
