Mom’s Surprise Bag
A surprise a day keeps tears and quarrels away – at least some of the time! It also adds an air expectation to each travel day. Designate a special time each day – two or three in the afternoon is usually a time when travelers begin to feel grumpy and weary of sitting – for the ceremony of the day’s treasure.
What treasures does Mom store in her surprise bag? They can be big or small, expensive or cheap, wrapped or unwrapped, something to play with, to make, or to eat. The selection is limited only by your creativity and budget. An important ingredient is that the surprise is right for the age and ability level of your child.
Some sample surprises are:
| - Hook rug kit | - Cute pad of paper |
| - Sugarless gum (a pack for each child) | - Activity books |
| - Flashlight and batteries | - Punch-out paper dolls |
| - Transparent tape | - Small toy |
| - Books | - Deck of Cards |
| - Comic books | - Doodle art |
| - Leather-working kit | - Magnetic chess or checkers |
| - Tapes and music | - Needlepoint or cross-stitch kit |
| - Magic erasable slate | - Sewing cards |
| - Colored pencils and paper | - Mini-Mastermind |
| - A new pencil and eraser | - Travel Bubble or Travel Bingo |
Anything listed under My Own Bag is perfect for Mom’s Surprise Bag too. Although children love to get sweets, we’ve found activity-oriented gifts the best as they give the children something to do. You can collect bargain surprises throughout the year for the surprise bag, so they will always be on hand for impromptu trips.
One mom added this tip – for games, check out the birthday party favors at your favorite toy store. Kids love that junk, and it’s fairly inexpensive.
A note of warning! When choosing surprises, remember that marbles roll, crayons and chocolate melt, chalk crumbles, bubble gum gets stuck in hair, and small toy parts get lost.
