Re-Inventing a Good and Blessed Future for Our Children

By Esther Davis-Thompson

MotherLove (Cont.)

to all of you who
have to step on your heart as you push you child
through his life in a wheel chair
having found that sickle cell, diabetes, cancer, AIDS,
muscular dystrophy can, in fact,
jump out of the medical books into your life and you,
packing hearts, and clothes and toys and dreams
and all in cars while you keep on going, going, going
without a home

you who are prisoners of your own prosperity
and more than likely, your own fears

and all of you
who get calls from the Jailhouse about a child of yours
who might explode
if you get called to school one more time
who really try to make it to church on Saturday or Sunday
who are tired of being so tired

who can’t get the house together
who can’t get your life together
who don’t cry anymore when you go to funerals

who can’t cry anymore for anything
who swear you’ll hit back next time
who pray without ceasing, pray without ceasing,
pray without ceasing
who drive around in deathtrap cars
who starch thrift store jeans
who sell food stamps to buy toilet paper
and cigarettes
and Christmas
and sometimes, when you have a minute, sit wondering
just how much real life you’re going to have to take

I love you
I admire you
and I earnestly
pray for your deliverance
as you continue daily to endeavor
to deliver your children
to themselves.
