Part One: You Are Special
The Red Plate

One Christmas, we received a much-prized gift from our special friends, the Dillows. It was a beautiful red ceramic plate that says, YOU ARE VERY SPECIAL TODAY. It has become one of our most treasured possessions.

When do the Arps use The Red Plate? Birthday’s, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day. When Jonathan wins a tennis match, when Jonathan loses a tennis match, when an Arp studies hard for a test but studied all the wrong things. You get the point. We use it for special days and for days that desperately need to be special.

You can find The Red Plate in most bookstores or you can create your own. One friend loved the idea and discovered a red plate and cup at a pottery factory for $1.00. It was christened in their home the day their son had a bike accident and chipped both front teeth. Barely able to eat, he had his dinner on The Red Plate and his milk in The Red Cup.

Why not start your own Special Plate traditions? There is nothing that says your special plate has to be red. It could be blue, green, whatever color you want. One family bought a pack of red paper plates at Christmas and then used them throughout the year as the Special Plate. The point is, it is used to say, "You are Special." Another family we know had the tradition of the Brave Cup. Whenever anyone took a risk or attempted something new, that family member received the Brave Cup. Whatever you do, choose some way to say to your family members, "We all think you are special."
