Starting Your Baby on Solid Foods
When it is time to start your baby on solid foods you will know by paying attention to certain signs. If your baby is sitting up alone and showing interest in what you eat she is probably ready. Babies are typically six months old when they are ready for solid food but many are ready both before and after six months. You begin to feed your baby solids to satisfy her need for extra protein. The foods you start with should just basically be nutritious.
When you begin solids go slowly. After you breast-feed or bottle-feed offer your baby a spoonful of solid food. Babies seem to generally like the taste and consistency of bananas so mash some and give them a try. To make sure your baby is not allergic to any of the foods you offer her limit yourself to one new solid per week. This way you can tell which foods upset her and you can remove the ones that do from her diet. If the reaction to a certain food is bad ask your pediatrician about possible allergies. Remember to offer your baby a variety of food, her taste buds are her new world!
