Dad and Baby

In an instant, the reckless abandon of our youth turns to the somber tone of ultimate responsibility. We often find ourselves wearing the Team Dad uniform before the realization of what the change will mean fully sinks in.

This is a time when the new father can be tugged by very strong emotions. One moment, he can feel drunk with the power of life. He has extended his bloodline for another generation. The next, he can feel humbled and ineffective when faced with handling the strenuous needs of a new baby.

“When we had our oldest daughter, I was sky high and rejoicing to the world,” said a smiling Tom Scanducci, a realtor and father of four. “I was handing out cigars for weeks. Then reality hit.”

As happens in most cases, the constant cares necessary to the newborn child turned the Scanducci household upside-down.

“Suddenly, it was a 24/7 event. My wife and I became tag-team partners just to try to get anything non-baby related accomplished. If we thought we had an idea of what we were in for before Laura was born, it all went out the window those first few nights,” said Scanducci. “Sometimes, I was ashamed that I actually felt some resentment toward her. Then I would look in her eyes and the love would flood back in.”
