Establish Flexible Spending Accounts
As working families face greater economic pressures, one way to ease these burdens is to allow employees to shelter some of their income from taxation for specific purposes such as medical and child-care expenses. Implementing a flexible spending account can help alleviate these financial burdens by increasing the amount of disposable income a family can allocate to childcare and family expenses.
Allow Flex-time and Flexible Works Hours
Although the ability of employers to implement flex-time policies will vary due in part to state and federal laws governing employment, flex-time allows an employee to exchange overtime hours for days off. Rather than being paid time and a half, an employee would be allowed to schedule time with his family without fear of losing income. In addition, flexible work arrangements permit employees to schedule their workday to ensure they also have time to fulfill their family obligations.
Encourage Tele-commuting
This policy allows employees to work at home both full and part-time by maintaining an electronic connection to the office via e-mail, fax, and telephone. In addition, tele-commuting employees have the potential to out-perform their counterparts in the office by not having to deal with “office distractions.” This policy also allows many parent the added benefit of home care for non-infant children, while relieving the stress of commutes. To maintain a high level of productivity for tele-commuters, it is important for employers to offer plenty of management and technical support in addition to stressing results and output.
Initiate Fatherhood Education Seminars in the Workplace
Employers often allow their employees to take work-related seminars on topics ranging from enhancing computer skills to organizing one’s personal life. A fatherhood education seminar could easily be added to an employer’s seminar program. Several organizations offer workplace-based fatherhood skills training and the National Fatherhood Initiative provides a listing of organizations that offer this type of training.
Set Up Leave Banks
This allows employees with excessive vacation or personal days to donate their extra time to employees who may need additional time to fulfill family obligations or commitments.
