Creating A Father-Friendly Workplace
Fathers Change The World One Child At A Time
Employers Can Help Create Stronger Families And Healthier Children While Building A More Productive Work Force
Today’s father faces pressures at work that fathers a generation ago never faced. Recent surveys have found that both men and women report significant work-family conflict. Absenteeism, tardiness, and a distracted employee are all symptoms of a father struggling with these tensions.
For too long, organizations have viewed family and work life as competing against one another. Now, by implementing father-friendly innovations, employers can help create stronger families and healthier children while building a more productive work force. Most fathers want to be their best at home and work alike, and with a little encouragement on the job, they can make major improvements. Here are some suggested innovations for employers to consider.
Allow Your Employees Time Off to be Good Dads
An increasing number of men report lost productivity due to family concerns. Implementing a workplace policy that encourages fathers to take time off for the birth or adoption of a child is an appreciated benefit and can help to increase productivity. Also, allowing fathers a reasonable number of opportunities to attend special family events, such as a school play or sporting event, and to fulfill family obligations, such as taking their child to a doctor’s appointment, can help to foster invaluable loyalty to an organization.
Implement a “Take Your Child to Work Day”
Young children are often curious about where daddy goes all day and what he does. One way to satisfy this curiosity and build good relationships with children is to allow fathers to take their children to work. Some organizations have taken this idea a step further, and have created workplace day-care centers. This provides the parents an opportunity to visit their children during breaks and over lunch.
