National Fatherhood Initiative The Most Important Role I’ll Ever Have Is… To Be My Child’s Dad! What Does NFI Do? NFI pursues this mission through a wide range of programs of services. They include the following: National Awareness Campaign Working in Partnership with the Ad Council, NFI has produced one of the most successful, award-winning public awareness campaigns ever. Generating well over $100 million in donated radio and television time and upwards of 70,000 calls to NFI’s 1-800 number, NFI’s PSA campaign has helped spawn a national fatherhood movement. National Resource Center NFI operates the most comprehensive clearinghouse and resource center available for individuals interested in advancing responsible fatherhood in America. The resource center offers dozens of products, such as brochures, PSAs, educational tools, fatherhood training material, curricula, a community fatherhood initiative “starter kit” and fatherhood books. The resource center also maintains a website with comprehensive information on fatherhood programming. Grass Roots Training Through a staff of experienced fatherhood programmers, NFI is engaged in extensive phone, and on-site consultation to local fatherhood “practitioners,” and conducts in-depth training seminars for a range of local contacts, including social agencies, prisons, civic organizations, schools, and the faith community. Official Task Force NFI has organized and works in official partnership with several bi-partisan task forces on fatherhood promotion, including in the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, Governors, and Mayors. Each task force works with NFI to develop an action plan to promote responsible fatherhood, such as NFI’s “Ten Things Mayors Can Do to Create Father-Friendly Cities.” Research and Education NFI is in the forefront of educating Americans on the scope and consequences of father absence by collecting and analyzing data, conducting public surveys, and evaluating popular entertainment. For example, NFI annually publishes Father Facts (Link to Daddy Rap piece), the nation’s premiere fact book on fatherhood, participates regularly in public opinion research, and analyzes prime time television’s portrayal of fatherhood. State and Local Initiatives A cornerstone in NFI’s national strategy is building a grassroots fatherhood movement. In addition to providing technical assistance to other agencies and programs, NFI is presently working in dozens of locations across America to build local fatherhood initiatives, usually city-wide or state-wide in scope, that will work locally to advance NFI’s strategy of community mobilization, awareness raising, and providing technical assistance. NFI’s Mission NFI was founded to stimulate a society-wide movement to confront the growing problem of father absence, and is dedicated to improving the well-being of children by increasing the number of children growing up with involved, committed, and responsible fathers.
