David Decides About Thumbsucking

David Decides
My name is David.
I want to ask you a hard question.
Have you ever found yourself doing something you like, and not liking that you’re doing it?
I have. I like to suck my thumb. It feels good.
When I’m bored, my thumb goes in my mouth. Sucking keeps me busy. When I feel sad, like after a fight with my mom, sucking makes me feel better. When I’m tired, sucking my thumb stops my fussing.
Most of all, at night I suck my thumb to fall asleep.
But... I don’t like anyone to see me with my thumb in my mouth.
Sucking is for babies, and I’m getting big.
Still that thumb does feel good when I want it.
One night when Dad sat on my bed to kiss me goodnight he told me “David, maybe it’s time to stop Thumbsucking.”
I was mad. I put my thumb in my mouth. I pulled the blankets up over my head. In a few minutes, I felt calmer.
Dad leaned toward me.
“David,” he whispered, “talk to your sister and brother. Ask them if they ever sucked their thumbs.”
The next day I saw my big sister Jennifer at the piano. I sat next to her and listened to her practicing. “Jennifer,” I asked, “did you ever suck your thumb?”
Jennifer stopped playing her music. She turned to me and answered, “Lots. See how my top teeth don’t match up with my bottom teeth? My thumb pushed the top teeth forward. Now I wear these wires called braces to push the teeth back. I’ll have to wear braces this year and probably next year too.”
I shivered. I don’t want my thumb to push my teeth out of place.
“When did you decide to stop sucking your thumb, Jennifer?” I asked.
Jennifer looked straight into my eyes. “When I was little,” she said, “I thought sucking was fine. Whenever I had nothing to do. I used to suck my thumb. Then I started school. That’s when I decided to stop. I didn’t want anyone to se me sucking like a baby.”
