Your Pet versus Your Baby
For quite some time now you've had a baby. Well you call him your baby and he thinks he deserves all of your attention. Unfortunately for him, his world is about to change. Of course we're talking about your pet dog or cat! A new baby can create a world of stress for your pets. You have had nine months to prepare for the new arrival but a new baby is a complete surprise for your pet. It is a really good idea to prepare your pet ahead of time for the new arrival. Planning things in advance will make your pet happier and more understanding of the change. It will also relieve some of the worry you may feel about how your pet is going to respond to your new baby.
After the baby arrives certain rooms, like the nursery, are going to become off limits to your pet. Start this ahead of time with a child safety gate. A good idea for cats is a screened door to the rooms you want to keep them out of. Your pet is probably used to greeting you when you walk through the door. Try greeting your pet first thing, just like always, when you arrive home. Have a friend or spouse carry the baby in for you. You have to be careful not to neglect your pet so jealousy does not pose a problem. Tips like these will help create a smooth transition but make sure to watch your pet for aggressiveness. The key to having your pet like your baby is maintaining a good relationship with it.
