Coins, Beads and Pencils
When kids start exploring their bodies they sometimes end up doing silly things. They are especially fascinated with the holes in their mouths, noses and ears. For example, some kids swallow quarters, stick beads in their nostrils or pencils in their ears. Each of these instances can turn into emergencies if not taken care of correctly. Most coins pass through the body with no problems. If your child begins having trouble eating or drinking there may be a serious problem. The coin could be stuck in the esophagus and require medical attention. Other situations require medical treatment immediately.
If your child sticks something in their ear they can damage their hearing. It is possible to damage it permanently if the object is not removed correctly. Letting the doctor pull the object out is your safest bet. If an object is shoved up the nose the result may be infection. The mucus that removes harmful substances in the nose will be clogged and will not drain properly. Don't try to remove any objects from ears or noses yourself. You may only make things worse by pushing the object farther in. In all of these cases your pediatrician is the best person to contact.
