The Institute for American Values (www.americanvalues.org), founded in 1987, is a private, nonpartisan organization devoted to research, publication, and public education on issues of family well being and civil society. By providing forums for scholarly inquiry and debate, the Institute seeks to bring fresh knowledge to bear on the challenges facing families and civil society. Through its publications and other educational activities, the Institute seeks to bridge the gap between scholarship and policymaking, bringing new information to the attention of policy makers in the government, opinion makers in the media, and decision makers in the private sector.

The Institute is proud to be one of the sponsoring organizations of The Marriage Movement: A Statement of Principles. Over 100 prominent scholars and religious and civic leaders have joined together to pledge that "in this decade we will turn the tide on marriage and reduce divorce and unmarried childbearing, so that each year more children will grow up protected by their own two happily married parents and more adults' marriage dreams will come true." The Statement has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles and radio talk shows. Most encouraging is that since its release on June 29; over 1,950 individuals have added their names to the list of original signatories to state how important they feel marriage is in America.
