daily temperature reading(DTR)
with appreciation to Virginia Satir
PAIRS seminars are known for the practical, proven skills participants learn that help them create and sustain successful
relationships. One of the first skills taught in PAIRS is the Daily Temperature Reading, which was originally developed by Virginia Satir.
The "DTR" is invaluable for couples in any stage of relationship, as well as for parents, children, entire families, friends and even
co-workers. Traditionally, PAIRS suggest you set aside 15 minutes to a half-hour as often as daily to do a DTR with the significant
people in your life.
As important as we know it is to nourish our relationships daily, in our fast moving society and busy schedules this important exercise
can be forgotten or put on the back burner. We've incorporated a DTR exercise page into Lovegevity.com as a way to stay in touch with
your mate using the Internet. By book marking the exercise page you can log in each day for five minutes and email your DTR to your
mate, family member, friend, co-worker or anyone else who is significant in your life. No more excuses. As PAIRS experts say, "The
DTR is an important way to develop open, flowing communication. It's as important to vibrant relationships as water and sunlight are to
healthy gardens."
After you take the time to read and understand how the Daily Temperature Reading works, you will be ready to start building
relationships that thrive ... one day at a time.
PAIRS DTR involves five areas that you'll cover in order each time you use the tool.
Appreciation
New Information
Puzzles
Complaints with Requests for Change
Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams
As you become used to the temperature reading, you'll evolve your own style and routine for making it a ritual in your life. You'll also
find that the best way to do the DTR is in person when you can focus your full attention on each other. Ideally, sit face to face, knee to
knee, making eye contact and hand contact, and avoiding all distractions.
If you can't do the DTR in person, do it by phone or online. But do it!
Let's explore each step of the DTR.
