The Second Half of Marriage
By David & Claudia Arp
A Marriage Checkup
Away from all our responsibilities and with no one else around, we were free to talk about our marriage and where we wanted it to go in the future. As we ushered in the second half of our marriage, we defined our goals. First we needed to reconnect as a couple, redefine our relationship, and let go of some of our unrealistic dreams. We simply couldn’t do all the things we had planned to do when the children grew up – plus, to be honest, we didn’t have the energy.
Marriage Assets
Our faith in God is the foundation for our marriage. We define our marriage as a partnership with each other and with God. Years ago we chose Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 as a theme for our marriage. It describes what we want our marriage relationship to look like:
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
