The Second Half of Marriage
By David & Claudia Arp
A Sentimental Journey
For years, we had looked forward to the second half of marriage and often talked about taking an empty-nest trip – a trip during which we could regroup and initiate the second half of our marriage. We had always wanted to visit New England, so as we had dreamed about our empty nest, we had dreamed of seeing the fall foliage of Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. That morning, we discussed our dream and decided to turn into reality. In a few weeks we were to lead our Marriage Alive seminar for a church in the Washington, DC, area. So we resolved that after our seminar was over, we would head north.
The first couple of days, we had no agenda except to relax and enjoy being together. We knew from past experience that right after leading our Marriage Alive seminars was usually a time of vulnerability for us. We use so much emotional energy helping other couples that we need some time to get restored ourselves. So we slept late each morning and enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the quaint bed-and-breakfast where we were saying. One morning the owners even sang for us!
We don’t know what it is about walking, but that’s when we communicate best, so we took a hike on the coast of Maine. The cool, brisk wind and misty spray from the waves energized us as we surveyed the state of marriage.
