When Honeymoon Dreams Come True
Smart Ideas Plus a Few Fun Locations
What's the best place to go? What's the best deal out there right now?
The travel industry is perhaps the ultimate quicksand playground. Prices and promotional packages appear and disappear very quickly -- too fast for most periodicals. By the time you read it, it's history. With that in mind, here are a few popular favorites.
- Disney World. No American life is ever complete without experiencing at least one Disney theme park. Disney World in Orlando, Florida has a multitude of facilities and packages to suit a variety of budgets. (The combined terror and ecstacy of the famous "Space Mountain" roller coaster can be either the ultimate aphrodisiac or grounds for divorce!)
- Cancun, Mexico is a perennial favorite among younger couples -- lots of bars, hotels and nightlife, plus a great conversion rate between the U.S. dollar and the peso.
- Tahiti might be the ultimate romantic location. Again, lots of packages to suit different budgets. Some packages will include visits to neighboring locales such as Moroa, Bora Bora, Manihi and Rangiroa.
- Caribbean Islands. Nassau and Grenada have some great options for the cost conscious. Check out La Source in Grenada, a hotel offering packages that include spa-oriented pampering. St. Martin is a bit more expensive, but offers a winning combination of Dutch and French cultures. Travellers can enjoy shopping on the French side by day and the Dutch casinos by night. For a top-of-the-line experience, check out Nevis, St. Bart's, or the British Virgin Islands.
- Cruises. Many of the 4-day packages are ideally suited to the cost-conscious and anyone else who weds on the weekends, since they typically depart on Sundays and Mondays. Among the seven-day cruises, the Hawaiian islands are a traditional favorite. More recently popular is Alaska -- a little chillier, but the scenery is spectacular.
- San Francisco. No human life is complete without at least one romantic encounter in San Francisco. Ride the cable cars, go to Chinatown for a "dim-sum" brunch, drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, or just walk up and down the hills, admiring the colorful Victorian houses and spectacular hilltop views of the water. For the cost conscious, Oakland and Berkeley across the bay offer some less expensive accommodations while The City is just a "BART" ride away.
- The Pacific Northwest. The drive up the coast is one of the prettiest in the U.S. Portland and Seattle offer a variety of sights, lodgings and entertainments. Check an up-to-date guide for some of the quaint and storied bed-and-breakfasts available along the way.
Whatever your destination and whatever your planned itinerary, be sure to allow for some time just be together and enjoy one-another's company. As you begin your new life together, this is a time to put relatives, friends, employers, realtors and assorted strangers out of mind.
They'll all still be there when you get home.
