Selecting Your Wedding Flowers:
Celebrating A Life of Togetherness
By Maryellen Gor

Your wedding day is one you will remember for the rest of your life. I know, I’ve been married for twenty-nine years myself and I can still remember each and every detail as if it were yesterday.

Now you’re getting ready to create your own memories of a lifetime. Every aspect of that day is special to you, from the invitations to your wedding dress and the food.

The flowers you choose are also important and you spend a great deal of time deciding which flowers you want. What if selecting your bridal flowers became easier because you knew exactly what they meant to you?

Throughout history, flowers have been assigned a variety of meanings. Flower references can be found in Greek mythology, Chinese history, the Bible, and in the works of Shakespeare. Today, these meanings can bring significance to the flowers you choose for your wedding day. I have been using flowers to grow gardens that help me celebrate the special moments in my life. We grow many gardens during our lives that mark and celebrate the new paths we have chosen. A marriage is one such path, and it needs to be solid with ideals that represent what you and your partner want to commit to and celebrate everyday.

I have always loved stephanotis and white roses so I had them combined with baby’s breath to form my bridal bouquet. Stephanotis means happiness in marriage and white roses symbolize charm and spiritual love. After the wedding I gave my bridal bouquet to a preservation specialist who turned it into a dried flower arrangement and had it framed with my wedding invitation. It has been hanging on the wall of my master bedroom ever since.

As you plan your wedding, one of the most important coordinators you interact with is your florist. A good florist will work with you to design your bridal bouquet and floral centerpieces. He or she will help you select flowers for your bridal bouquet, centerpieces, wedding cake, corsages, and boutonnières that represent what you and your partner mean to each other, as well as the qualities and characteristics you want in your marriage. Be sure to tell your family and friends about the significance of your flowers. These people can be a source of strength and encouragement as you start on the marriage garden path.
